Regional leaders of APT met by teleconference on February 5, 2002.  Some very interesting discussion surfaced which I will summarize below.  Your comments on anything mentioned here, or anything arising from these issues, are welcome and I encourage you to send an email to me directly.

            1.    APT Central Website Proposal

APT Central presented a proposal that would allow Chapters the ability to access and update their own Chapter Web Page on the APT Central website. Currently chapters are sending update requests to APT Central, which often does not get updated in a timely fashion.  APT does not have the needed staff time or financial resources to maintain every chapter’s web site effectively.  APT Central will fine-tune the proposal to offer levels of service from basic (at no charge) to allowing greater flexibility and autonomy (on a fee-for-service basis).  The Regional Directors will solicit their Chapter Leaders for input on the web services they need from APT Central and at what level.  Based on the results of the Chapters needs, a proposal will be prepared to present to the Board at the April 26 Strategic Planning meeting.

The Canada Region wishes to continue to be a link on APT Central's website and this will continue, uninterrupted. There will be no cost to our Region.  We are very fortunate to have Lynda Trommelen managing this website and bringing us to a place where we are web self-sufficient!

2.     APT  Financial Status

As with many organization, APT is looking for ways to reduce costs and continue to attract ne members, retain existing members through new services and products.    APT is going through a process of reviewing all of their existing services to determine their continued viability.  It was explained that $55.00 of APT membership fees goes towards the publication of the Bulletin of Psychological Type and the Journal of Psychological Type.  There was discussion around the value of the publications to the membership.  Julie noted that previous APT surveys do show that segments of the membership do value each of the publications.  It was suggested that APT produce these publications electronically on the Web site.  Julie explained that the Board is looking into the viability of this, however, APT does not own the Journal so it is not APT's to produce in electronic format.  And, while there would be some cost-savings in postage and printing, the majority of the costs are in production and editing. Karen asked about levels of membership and benefits received.  This is something the Board is also looking into, but there is a concern that by offering the Journal on a subscription basis, could in fact cause the demise of the Journal. This discussion will be part of the Board’s Strategic Planning session in April.

3.    Strategic Goals

APT Central is working on Strategic Goals.  As a Region, Canadian members are asked to comment on these goals as well as to propose new goals for our Region and for APT Central.  Please forward you suggestions to me at  scourtice@shaw.ca  and I will compile them and forward them to APT Central.  The goals now being examined are as follows:

  1. To maintain a fiscally responsible, smoothly functioning, self-supporting national organization.

  2. To encourage and support type research

  3. To support [the development of and participation in] an international council for psychological type [to foster the professional and ethical use of psychological type in other nations.]

  4. To provide quality [membership service] education in theory and application of psychological type for our members and all interested persons.
